Step Four

Going Deeper

Node software, explorers, and hardware our members actually run. Curated, not sponsored.

Step 4 of 4  •  Start Here Path

This is the last step and the one that never really ends. You have a wallet, you have Bitcoin in it, and you have proven you can recover it. Everything here is optional and everything here makes you a little more self-reliant. Take it one piece at a time, in whatever order suits you.

Node Software

Running a node means you verify the rules yourself instead of trusting someone else's server. It is the most meaningful step you can take after self-custody, and it costs you nothing but a little hardware and patience.

Bitcoin Core

Reference

The reference implementation. Everything else on this list is built around it. Expect a full blockchain download and around a terabyte of storage for an unpruned node.

Windows, macOS, Linux

Umbrel

Easiest Setup

Turns a Raspberry Pi or spare machine into a node with a browser dashboard and an app store for Lightning, block explorers, and more. The friendliest way in.

Raspberry Pi, Linux

Start9

Privacy Focused

A self-hosted server operating system with a strong privacy posture. Runs your node plus other personal services, all under your own roof.

Raspberry Pi, x86

RaspiBlitz

Advanced

Command line first and highly customizable. Best if you want to understand every layer of what your node is doing rather than clicking through a dashboard.

Raspberry Pi

Tools and Explorers

Small utilities that make daily use easier. Check fees before you send, verify a transaction, or watch the network without handing over your address history.

Mempool.space

Fees

Block explorer and fee estimator. Check current network congestion before you send so you are not overpaying. You can also self-host it on your own node.

Web and Self-Hosted

Coldcard

Signing Device

Bitcoin-only hardware signer that never has to touch a computer. Works over microSD with Sparrow and Nunchuk for fully air-gapped signing.

Hardware

Seed Storage

Backup

Paper burns and fades. Steel plates and washer-and-punch kits survive a house fire. Whatever you choose, store it somewhere only you can reach.

Earning and Spending

Earn Sats For Paying
Your Bills

You are going to pay the mortgage this month either way. The lights stay on either way. The Fold Card puts bitcoin back in your pocket for the spending you were already doing, no budget changes, no side hustle, no new habits to build.

This One Is Custodial

Fold holds the bitcoin you earn until you move it. That is the tradeoff for the convenience. Everything else on this page keeps you in control of your own keys, and this card is the exception worth knowing about.

Sweep It Out

Rewards sitting in someone else's account are not yours yet. Set a reminder and move your balance to a wallet you control on a schedule. Once a month is plenty for most people.

Before You Download Anything

Always get software from the official project site or the developer's own repository. Fake wallet apps show up in app stores and search ads regularly, and they exist for exactly one reason. If a link looks off, ask someone at the next meetup before you install it.
